How are paperback books bound?
The method and advantages
Paperback books are bound using the perfect binding method. The inner pages are glued together with a medium weight card softcover along the spine and then trimmed to size of the finished book creating the familiar square-backed paperback format.
Perfect binding is popular because it supports medium to high page counts, and offers a cost-effective alternative to hardback books. If you prefer something a bit more premium, have a look at our hardback books.
How to supply artwork for paperback books
File setup for Paperbacks
As these are perfect bound, we require 2 separate PDF files; a cover file and the other containing all inner pages as single pages.
Cover file
The cover should be setup as a spread which includes (from right to left) the front page + spine + back page with a 3mm bleed all around.
Inner pages file
Your file should contain all pages as single pages not spreads in reading order. Pages should include a 3mm bleed area all around and please keep text within a quiet area of approximately 5mm away from the page edge.
Colour Profiles
Wherever possible always try to work CMYK colours preferably to fogra 39l standards. If using non DTP programs for example Microsoft word, Canva etc. these programs usually output to the RGB spectrum which is suited for colour screens not professional printing. Our rip (raster information process) will automatically convert to CMYK, however bear in mind these colour may not be the same as intended from your origination file.

Binding Styles for Booklets & Brochures
Saddle-stitched or Stapled
One of the most common types is saddle-stitch binding, where the pages are folded in half and stapled along the fold. This type of binding is ideal for a lower page count, as it provides a clean and professional look.
Perfect bound
Perfect binding involves glueing the pages together and attaching a cover. Perfect bound booklets and brochures are commonly used for higher page count. This is binding type is more durable with a polished finish often seen in magazines and catalogues. Perfect binding is also commonly used for paperback books. Wire bound or Wire O
Spiral binding or wire-o binding method involve securing the pages with a metal or plastic coil, which allows the pages to lay flat when opened. Wire-binding is particularly useful for booklets that need to be used as workbooks or study guides and cookbooks.
Paper options
We have various paper options available, each with its own unique characteristics. We also try to use certified FSC papers wherever possible. Here are some popular choices:

Do you print hardcover booklets?
Currently we do not do hardcovers, but it’s something we are looking into for the very near future.
Can you print large quantities?
We generally focus on short runs, however we also can produce long runs in the thousands.
How are my brochures printed?
For most runs of say under a thousand copies, we would normally use high quality digital printing, otherwise these may go on to a litho printing press.
Can you print custom sizes?
We can print almost any size. Send us your full specifications and we’ll advise if it’s feasible or not.
I’ve designed in Microsoft word, would this good enough to print?
It all depends on the final output required, e.g. if it’s a luxury brochure, then most likely not, however if it was study manual or training manual, then it may work.
Do I need to add bleeds the pages?
Yes, usually we require a 3mm bleed all round for the best result in cases where there is white space on all sides of the page, we may be able to work without it.
Can you help with fixing my design?
We can, however it will slow your job down. We can also help in setting up your entire artwork.

For paperback books and novels which generally are text-led books with a small number of illustrations, a lightweight uncoated paper is often the best choice because it reduces glare and provides a comfortable reading experience. We offer white uncoated papers in 90gsm, 100gsm and 120gsm, available in popular novel sizes.
